Ski troops wearing their two-piece snowsuits advance through a village in 1942. The snowsuit provided good freedom of movement for the troops, especially while skiing. The men are wearing the standard equipment for a rifleman with the usual belt and cartridge pouches, which were generally not camouflaged. The Kar98k bolt-action rifles that are slung over their backs for ease of carriage have clearly been camouflaged with a coating of winter whitewash paint.

Sheltering in the snow. By 1942 many German soldiers were taught to construct native style shelters from tree branches and to build igloos. These troops, wearing the two-piece snowsuit with the large attached hoods, are erecting an igloo. Beneath the hood they generally wore either the M1935 steel helmet or the Bergmütze.
